Acivir is an antiviral medication effective against:
- Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections of skin and mucous membranes
- Herpes zoster (shingles) infections
- Initial and recurrent genital herpes outbreaks
- Varicella (chickenpox) infections
- Prophylaxis and treatment in immunocompromised patients (including HIV/AIDS)
- Post-bone marrow transplantation cases
Dosage and Administration
- Begin treatment at first symptom appearance (tingling, blistering)
- Take with a full glass of water; maintain adequate hydration
- May be taken with or without food (food may reduce stomach upset)
- Complete full prescribed course, even if symptoms improve earlier
- For missed doses: take when remembered unless close to next dose
- Keep lesions clean, dry, and protected from irritation

Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to acyclovir or valacyclovir
- Severe renal impairment (requires dose adjustment)
