Description
Aggrenox is a combination medication containing aspirin (a salicylate) and dipyridamole. Aspirin reduces pain, fever, and inflammation by blocking certain substances in the body. Dipyridamole prevents blood clots by stopping platelets from sticking together. Aggrenox is prescribed to lower the risk of stroke in people who have had blood clots or a transient ischemic attack (TIA or "mini-stroke").
Dosage and Administration
- Take Aggrenox exactly as prescribed.
- It can be taken with or without food.
- Swallow the capsule whole—do not crush, chew, or break it.
- Do not stop taking Aggrenox without consulting your doctor.
Precautions
- Aggrenox increases bleeding risk, even from minor injuries. Seek medical help if you experience a head injury or uncontrolled bleeding.
- Inform surgeons or dentists before any procedure, as you may need to temporarily stop the medication.
- If undergoing a heart stress test, stop Aggrenox 48 hours beforehand unless directed otherwise.
- Avoid alcohol, as it raises the risk of stomach bleeding.
Contraindications
Do not use Aggrenox if:
- You are allergic to aspirin, dipyridamole, or NSAIDs.
- You have asthma with nasal polyps or a history of severe allergic reactions to aspirin/NSAIDs.
- You are giving it to a child or teen with fever, flu, or chickenpox (risk of Reye’s syndrome).
Consult your doctor before use if you have:
- Stomach ulcers, bleeding disorders, heart disease, low blood pressure, or myasthenia gravis.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding—aspirin may cause bleeding during delivery, and breastfeeding risks are not fully known.
- Avoid other NSAIDs or over-the-counter pain relievers unless approved by your doctor.
Possible Side Effects
Seek emergency help for:
- Allergic reactions (hives, swelling, trouble breathing).
- Severe bleeding (bloody stools, vomiting blood, brain bleeding symptoms like confusion or severe headache).
- Liver problems (jaundice, dark urine, stomach pain).
Common side effects may include:
- Headache.
- Heartburn, nausea, or stomach pain.
- Diarrhea.
Drug Interactions
Inform your doctor about all medications, especially:
- Blood thinners (warfarin, heparin).
- Heart or blood pressure drugs.
- Diabetes or seizure medications.
- NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen).
Missed Dose
- Take the missed dose as soon as possible.
- Skip it if it’s almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose.
Overdose
Seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms may include dizziness, sweating, rapid heartbeat, or ringing in the ears.
