Description
Amlodipine reduces blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood. As a calcium channel blocker, it widens blood vessels to improve circulation. This prescription medication comes in tablet form, sometimes combined with other drugs.
Common brand names include Amlode, Amlotan, and Istin.
Amlodipine is used to treat high blood pressure and prevent angina (chest pain from heart disease). Note that it doesn't relieve sudden angina attacks - you'll need separate medication for that.
Adults and children aged 6+ can take amlodipine, but it's not suitable for everyone. Consult your doctor if you have:
- Allergies to amlodipine or its ingredients
- Liver or kidney disease
- Heart failure or recent heart attack
- Aortic stenosis
- Cardiogenic shock
- Severe low blood pressure
During pregnancy, amlodipine is generally considered safe but lacks extensive safety data. Your doctor may recommend alternatives. For breastfeeding mothers, small amounts pass into milk but rarely cause issues in healthy babies.
While amlodipine doesn't affect female fertility, it may impact sperm function. It doesn't interfere with contraception, though hormonal contraceptives may reduce its effectiveness.
Take amlodipine as prescribed, usually starting at 5mg daily. Your doctor may adjust this to 10mg if needed. Never stop suddenly as blood pressure may spike dangerously.
Take tablets once daily at consistent times, with or without food. Avoid grapefruit as it increases drug absorption and side effects. If you miss a dose, skip it and resume your normal schedule.
The medication begins working immediately but may take weeks for full effect. Angina patients might initially experience worsened pain - keep emergency medication available.
Most people require long-term treatment. Common side effects include headaches, dizziness, flushing, rapid heartbeat, and swollen ankles. These often improve over time.
Seek urgent medical help for:
- Severe abdominal/back pain with illness
- Bloody diarrhea
- Yellow skin/eyes
- Worsening chest pain
- Breathing difficulties
- Irregular heartbeat
- Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing problems)
Inform your doctor about all other medications, including:
- Antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole)
- HIV medications
- Antibiotics
- St John's wort
- Heart medications
- Immunosuppressants
Alcohol may enhance blood pressure-lowering effects. Avoid drinking if you experience dizziness, drowsiness, or headaches.
