Description
Amoxycillin is prescribed to treat or prevent certain bacterial infections, including those affecting the ears, nose, throat, urinary tract, and skin.
It belongs to the penicillin class of antibiotics and works by inhibiting bacterial growth.
Take this medication exactly as directed, without missing doses, even if symptoms improve. It can be taken with or without food, but food may help if stomach upset occurs. Chewable tablets should be thoroughly chewed or crushed and mixed with food. Extended-release tablets must be swallowed whole with food. Tablets for suspension should be dissolved in water, not swallowed whole. A liquid suspension is available for those who cannot swallow pills—shake well before use. For feeding tube administration, flush the tube before and after giving the medication. Crushed tablets can be mixed with milk, chocolate milk, or pudding.
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Eating small frequent meals, maintaining oral hygiene, or using probiotics may help. Women may experience yeast infections—report any itching or discharge.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it's close to the next dose. Do not double the dose or alter the prescribed regimen without consulting your doctor.
Inform your doctor of any allergies to amoxicillin, penicillin, or other medications. Mention any past allergic reactions, including rashes, hives, swelling, or breathing difficulties.
Seek immediate medical attention in case of overdose, severe allergic reactions (wheezing, swelling, fever), persistent vomiting or diarrhea, unusual bruising or bleeding, or worsening symptoms.
Drug interactions may occur. Consult your doctor before combining amoxicillin with other medications.
Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.
Store in a cool, dry place, out of children's reach, and do not use beyond the expiration date.
Pregnancy Category B: Animal studies show no fetal risk, but adequate human studies are lacking, or animal studies indicate risk unconfirmed in human pregnancies.
