Description
Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum aminopenicillin antibiotic that works by inhibiting cell wall synthesis in susceptible bacteria. It resists stomach acid and is well absorbed. Effective against gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria (including Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli, and Haemophilus influenzae), it treats mixed bacterial infections. Penicillinase-producing organisms are resistant. Used for pneumonia and infections of respiratory, urinary, and digestive systems.
Take exactly as directed. Swallow capsules with water 30 minutes before or 2 hours after meals.
Consult your doctor if allergic to penicillin or cephalosporins. May cause diarrhea - do not self-treat without medical advice. Can cause false-positive urine glucose tests. Prolonged use may lead to superinfection - report worsening symptoms.
Contraindicated if hypersensitive to ampicillin. Use cautiously with liver impairment, asthma, or hay fever.
Possible side effects include diarrhea, nausea, rash, mouth sores, fever, or colitis.
May increase effects of oral anticoagulants and reduce effectiveness of some contraceptives.
If you miss a dose: For twice-daily dosing, take when remembered with next dose 5-6 hours later. For thrice-daily, take immediately with next dose in 2-4 hours. Never double doses.
Seek immediate help for overdose symptoms like hives or rash.
Store at 15-30°C (59-86°F) in dry place protected from light.
